Are the igniters clicking after the burner has been turned off?

You’re likely familiar with the sound of a gas stove/cooktop. Turn the knob on and the burner will ignite. Everything is fine. What do you do if the burner’s igniters start clicking?

There are several reasons your igniters might not turn off after you turn the burner off. You could have a bad switch, loose burner caps, dirty igniters, moisture around the igniters, or a faulty switch.

How to Stop Igniters From Clicking After Burner is Turned On

Food debris causes Igniters To Click When Off

The stove or cooktop ignitions may not stop clicking even after they are turned off. It could just be time for a cleaning. This is one of the leading causes of clicking sounds. You can sometimes get food debris stuck around the ignition. This will cause the igniter to stop working when it is off.

It’s a simple fix. It is as easy as removing the gunk.

  • Unplug power source
  • The burner cap should be removed
  • Use a small toothbrush or other small brush to clean/dislodge food:
      • Around burner
      • Under knobs
      • Around igniter
      • For the final bits of buildup, use an earbud and dip in alcohol
      • Turn on the burner and replace the cap

Moisture causes Igniters Click When Off

The presence of excess moisture is another reason that igniters can click incessantly. Excess moisture can cause pots to boil, sauces to spill and other mishaps when you cook. Moisture can seep into an area where the igniter is located and cause it to click when the stove/cooktop turns off. Also, moisture can build up on switches.

A second cause is aggressive cleaning. You could have let too much water or cleaning product seep into the igniter.

Let the parts breathe and let them dry should solve the problem.

  1. Unplug power source
  2. Turn off burner caps and knobs
  3. Lift stove top
  4. You can absorb the moisture with a paper towel, and then let it air out for a few more hours.
  5. Light it up and replace all the parts!

Burner Cap Misaligned – Igniters to Click When Off

Fastidious cooks may not notice a difference if they hear the range igniters click in the off position. The burner cap could be loose, causing interference with the igniter. This problem can be fixed by simply readjusting the burner cap.

  • Make sure that the stove/cooktop is fully cooled
  • The burner grate should be removed
  • Take out the burner cap and put it back on.

Faulty Parts Cause Igniters To Click When Off

If you hear the igniters clicking even after turning off the burner, this could be due to defective parts. If you have the skills to replace the part yourself, you can buy it. You might be looking for the following:

  • Spark Module
  • Spark Ignition Switch
  • Ignitor
